I. How It Works
Under lightning conditions, when a downward lightning conductor approaches the ground, any conductive surface generates an upward lightning conductor. In passive lightning rods, upward conductors only propagate after prolonged charge recombination. The SI Advance Discharge Flasher significantly shortens the excitation time of upward conductors. Under high static electric field conditions prior to lightning discharge, the SI E Advance Discharge Flasher produces controlled amplitude and frequency pulses at the rod tip. This causes the lightning rod to generate and propagate an upward conductor, thereby intercepting the downward lightning conductor emitted from thunderclouds.
II. Lightning arrester test
SI advance discharge lightning arresters are tested in high-voltage laboratories. The test mimics natural lightning conditions and allows performance comparisons between different lightning protection systems.
The test simulated natural electric field conditions by combining a constant electric field (generated by charges between clouds and the ground, simulated by a DC generator in the laboratory) with a pulsed electric field (produced by the lower conductor approaching the ground using a Marx generator with a long lead wave). The corona at the rod's tip was measured using a photomultiplier tube method to determine the triggering time of both the simple passive lightning rod (SR) and the SI pre-discharge arrester.
This allows the determination of the average values for both the Simple Passive Lightning Rod (SR) and the PDC Advance Discharge Flasher. The time difference is defined as T(SR) minus T(SI), yielding the advance time ΔT for the SI Advance Discharge Flasher.
